Watchet Cemetery & Burial Authority
Watchet Town Council is the Burial Authority and the Finance & General Purposes Committee is delegated to manage and maintain the site.
Watchet Cemetery, located on Brendon Road, near St Decuman’s Church, was opened in 1992. The cemetery has a range of facilities including a weather-proof waiting area and toilet, provision of water for flowers, and a peaceful Memorial Garden to remember those with strong links to the community who are not buried in the Watchet Cemetery.
St Decuman’s Church & The Closed Churchyard
The administration of the closed churchyard remains under the remit of the Parochial Church Council (PCC).
Section 215 of the Local Government Act 1972 provides for notice to be given by the PCC to a local authority (Parish, Town, or District) to effectively transfer liability for maintenance, but this can only given when the churchyard is closed. In 1989, the churchyard at St Decuman’s was closed and the liability for maintenance passed to Watchet Town Council, who continues to maintain the area to a high standard through the Council’s ground staff.
